can also confirm this bug.
Concerns normal Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop installation, and Ubuntu Studio 12.04 installation as well.
Verification on total 3 (somewhat older...) systems shows:
System 1: AMD Athlon 3000+ / Asus A7V880 (VIA Chipset) / NVidia GeForce 7600 GT /2G RAM: Crash as described.
System 2: AMD Athlon 2600+ / Asrock K7S8X (SiS chipset) / NVidia GeForce 440MX /1.25G RAM: Crash as described.
System 3: Intel Celeron 2 GHz (P4 architecture) / Intel i945 graphics / 512MB RAM : Installation succeeded.

So, it looks like an indication that AMD processors are affected. I will do another test with a 4th system, Athlon XP 2800+ / Asus A7V600 / ATI Radeon 9600 / 2G RAM to examine influence of NVidia vs. Radeon graphics.

From some experience I have already seen happening with some other packages:
Maybe someone could check the options with which the involved "ubiquity" and "Python 2.7" packages have been built... possibly they may have erroneously been built with SSE2 support included, which older AMD Athlon processors don't offer.

I am new viewing and reporting information about ubuntu bugs.

I found this thread searching a solution for my Xubuntu 12.04 installation on my old desktop (Xubunut Desktop iso, not Alternate), and the IOError 32 Broke Pipe.

Here my info:

AMD Sempron 2600+ / Asus A7V600-X / 2GB RAM / ATI Radeon

Applying workaround "sudo apt-get purge ubiquity-slideshow-xubuntu" (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/710582) before installing from live sessión it works fine.

I also ran into this issue on 2012-05-16 when installing Ubuntu 12.04 using the latest desktop ISO distribution. As with others experiencing this, I have an AMD system:

AMD Sempron 2400+ / Abit AN7 / 1.5GB RAM / Nvidia.

The workaround mentioned in an earlier comment did get me past the problem.

I just helped somebody to install Ubuntu and he experienced this bug, too.
His CPU is AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Uninstalling ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu helped.

Same issue on an AMD Athlon XP 3200+.
The workaround also worked for me.

I saw in some duplicate bugs that some users do not know how to apply the workaround.
For those interested, here are the steps :
- start your computer from the live-CD (or live-USB), and choose "Try Ubuntu without installing" instead of "Install Ubuntu"
- after some time, you should reach the desktop : click on the Ubuntu logo in the top left corner and type "terminal" (without the quotes)
- a terminal icon should appear below : click on it. You should have a command-line in a dark window
- type "sudo apt-get remove ubiquity-slideshow-xubuntu", and confirm the uninstallation when it is asked
- close the window with the red cross in its top left corner
- double-click on the desktop icon "Install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" and follow the usual installation steps
- when all the information will be entered, instead of having a slideshow of Ubuntu features during the installation, you will have a small window with a progress bar. But the installation should work fine

In any case, be aware that there is at least one other issue with these old CPUs on Linux : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+bug/968759 . It seems that Adobe compiled the recent Flash plugin versions with some options that are incompatible with our CPUs. So Flash crashes every time and is unusable... Thank you Adobe

Same problem for me with lubuntu 12.04 i386 iso,
and indeed purging ubiquity-slideshow-lubuntu worked around the problem.

Since the slideshow is only cosmetic, maybe ubiquity could show a small warning "slideshow crashed" and continue with the installation?
Having to search launchpad bugs and to purge packages in order to be able to install the OS doesn't give a good first impression... :)

Xubuntu 12.10 install goes fine till the last leg, then: 'The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. a desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem and try installing again.'

Used xubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.

Did multiple attempts. Sometimes you just hang at that point with a busy-sign cursor.

Did the suggest fix for AMD chips: 'sudo apt-get purge ubiquity-slideshow-xubuntu' in the LiveCD, then carry on with installing again. This works.

CPU is Athlon 1300, bios-clocked to 1733.

Thanks for working on this, guys. Please do consider adding this one to the Release Notes for 12.10. I had a multi-hour black-comedy before I found out this was the problem.

I can confirm that this bug is still present in Ubuntu 12.10. Installation goes fine, up until all files are copied and the installer goes to "Installing system" where the slideshow rolls.

The workaround to remove the ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu package (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1010461) before installing from the live session still works.

Without the workaround, installing on an Acer Aspire 1357LMi is impossible. The installer leaves a half-finished system, without bootloader and initramfs.

Processor is AMD Athlon XP-M 3000+, there is no sse2 instruction set in /proc/cpuinfo.
