Bug Description

When the update-manager detects that there are updates to installed packages, the update-manager icon appears on the launcher bar with a number in the upper-right corner with the # of packages that have updates. However, when I click on the icon, no window appears on any of the desktops. Even when I press the Window-W key combo to activate spread mode to display all open applications on all workspaces, I do not see the update-manager window. Double-clicking does nothing. Right-clicking then selecting the "Update Manager" selection does nothing as well.

My only option is to right-click and select "Install All Available Updates", which is annoying because I would like to know what is being updated before applying the update.

I am having a similar experience on a very recent install of 12.04 amd64. This exact series of events have happened twice for me, on two different days:

I log in, and leave the computer for a while (screen locks during this time). Come back; unlock screen and notice the update-manager icon appears in dash showing number of packages requiring update along with blue triangle indicating it wants attention. Clicking on the icon produces no response. Running "update-manager" from terminal also produces no response. The update-manager is clearly in the list of running processes (ps -e | grep update-manager), but is presumably not receiving the signal to open or not displaying.

Maybe the problem is an interaction with the locked screen?

problem can be awkwardly worked around from terminal by:
killall update-manager
update-manager

I am having the same issue, however it does not happen al the time.
It seems this only happens when update manager checks for updates automatically. After a reboot I can start it and it will open but not when it has checked for updates.

My work around is to right click the icon in the launcher and select Quit. I then rerun it from the gear icon in the top panel.
