desktop session doesn't start with unity 5.8 on intel graphics

Bug Description

After my latest update (which pulled in all the Unity 5.8 packages), when I log in to my normal Unity session, I never get a launcher or top menu bar. I see errors about "baddrawable" in my X log (which I hope is attached).
