Bug Description

On my laptop, in gnome, I have set the xfce window manager (XFWM4) as the default window manager in gnome (through gconf-editor), instead of metacity. Now, every time I log into gnome, the splash screen is there for a while.. It doesn't dissapear if clicked, but after some time (maybe a minute or so) after having logged in. If using metacity this doesn't happen.

Hope it gets fixed ^^

This sounds like something odd is going on with gnome-session.

looks like xfwm4 not registering correctly

Adam, could you try out some more window managers to make sure its only xfwm4 is misbihaving? thanks

I've tried icewm, the same happens. Blackbox seems to be fine, kwin also..

More testing:

xfwn4 and icewm get the splash screen, and when pressiong the exit button, no dialog will appear. Blackbox doesn't get the splash screen, but pressing exit won't make the exit dialog appear. Fluxbox is nearly the same: by pressing the splash screen, it dissapear. Also no exit-dialog. Enlightenment and openfox work fine. Kwin does odd things.

hmm, one could conclude then that the best thing is to stick to metacity :)
as your combination seems not popular enough to be fixed

maybe your right.. but this stuff has worked since breezy, and it is a bug. A release should be as bug free as posible. I don't pretend this little thing to be very important bug, with a high priority.. but if there was time, would be nice somebody looked into it.

you did not mention that this used to work before. And indeed we have very little time and much more important bugs to solve, like crashers in xfdesktop.

confirming. by the way, workarounded by disabling splash in /apps/gnome-session/options/show_splash_screen via gconf-editor

This is happening for me using Compiz and Gutsy. It seems that something is taking an inordinate amount of time to load. Once the notification area (networking, etc) appears on the panel, the splash screen goes away.

I experience the same behaviour as Yuttadhammo in Gutsy (using Gnome here). Something is taking long to load, and until then, the notification area isn't shown (which means no network-manager->no networking). If I disable desktop-effects the thing loads immediately.

The delay has gone now, and networking appears right away (after applying the latest updates). One other thing I noticed is that the startup sound doesn't play.
