Bug Description

I keep getting crash reports when I close VLC. Although the problem is random, I have even been able to duplicate it by starting VLC and closing it, without opening any media files. The real problem is that VLC isn't crashing (I promise!) but is properly responding to my order to exit, either by pressing Ctrl-Q or clicking the Close button in the window.

Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

outdated debug symbol package for libass4: package version 0.10.0-3 dbgsym version 0.9.13-1
outdated debug symbol package for libv4l-0: package version 0.8.6-1ubuntu1 dbgsym version 0.8.5-3ubuntu2

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

I've been getting this on my laptop and desktop since upgrading kubuntu to 12.04 (64 bit).
I also tried to generate a meaningful crash dump, but was told there are no symbols available.

i found this older bug report that describes a method which is i can follow to reproduce the bug every time. simply using the "open file" dialog will cause the crash to happen when you exit, weather or not you cancel or actually open a file in that dialog.
