Added Gnome Panel and tried it in Effects and No Effects Mode.
Logged out and back into Unity 3D mode - Panel crashed and it restarted and then appeared along with Unity 3D.
So I have both Unity 3D and Gnome Panel visible and useable con-current on the same desktop
