Bug Description

After scanning about 10-20 pages, I made a pause for about 10-15 minutes without closing the simple-scan application. After the break scanned two pages succesfully but after pressing the scan button for one more page application just crashed.
The problem is reproducible every time. Knowing that I ran it from command line. The output is attached. The device used to scan is HP Deskjet F4580.

Hi there,

thank you for filing this bug and showing your interest in Simple Scan!

This seems to be a Hardware Issue, i.e. Simple Scan does not support your scanner perfectly -- or possibly not at all.

Unfortunately such problems happen more often then they should, and while it might indeed be a problem with Simple Scan, in our experience, most of the time it is not.
This is why we prepared a check-list at [1] that will let you find out whether or not it really is a problem with Simple Scan and what your options are in either case.

Please read that list and tell us how you decided to proceed. I will set this bug to "Incomplete", so a friendly robot will expire this bug in 60 days if you do not respond. However, we would really prefer to hear back from you!

Best Regards
Michael

Hi,

the all-in-one device HP Deskjet F4580 is supported through HPLIP, so it does work with simple-scan. I did read through your how-to for reporting bugs: ran a test session with xsane - no problems.
However, after trying to reproduce the crash with simple-scan it worked perfectly and did not crash at all.
Nothing changed in the setup. The only possibility is that there were some updates in the meantime.

So I'd say leave the status as it is, since I cannot reproduce the problem. I'f the crash happens again - I'll post an update.

OK, thanks for your feedback! In sixty days a bot will set the bug to invalid if there is no further activity.

If I had to guess, I would say there is a problem with the hplip scanner driver that sometime causes simple-scan to crash. Unfortunately problems with the scanner driver can easily take down the complete simple-scan program with the current architecture (instead if just failing to produce a picture). It might be that simple-scan abuses the interface / skips some mandatory initialization. Sadly at the moment there is no manpower to investigate this further, however.

Best Regards
