Bug Description

In previous versions of Ubuntu scrolling the workspace switcher led to actual switching of the workspace.

Now in 12.04 (Ubuntu Classic 2D) scrolling workspace switcher widget does nothing.

1. Launch ubuntu in Ubuntu Classic (no effects) mode.
2. Set the number of workspaces > 1.
3. Add workspace switcher widget (if absent) to the panel.
4. Move mouse cursore above the widget.
5. Scroll mouse wheel.

What should happen:
Current workspace should change.

What happens:
Nothing.

Switching between windows by scrolling mouse wheel on the window list applet also does not work.

I think this might also be related to why using Compviz to map Mouse Button's 4 and 5 (the wheel) no longer works as a work space switcher either.

As of today, I'm using the most recent release of 12.04 LTS and Unity 2D.

I can confirm this bug, it appears with both "Ubuntu Classic (no effects)" and "Ubuntu Classic" so this doesn't seem to be a compiz vs. metacity problem.

Compiz was the cause of this bug at natty, so I had to disable effects back then.

This seems to be fixed in Debian now http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=669961 and upstream in Gnome https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=673833 - it'd be great if it could somehow make its way into Ubuntu 12.04, but it's probably too late for that now.

I've tested the patch mentioned in #5 (it's in quantal) but it doesn't fix the workspace switcher issue. The tasklist does now change application with the wheel though, which is a bonus.

I really should read bug reports better: I was testing this on Gnome Classic + Compiz.

On Gnome Classic No Effects, i.e. Metacity, the backported 3.4.2 libwnck-3 works *perfectly*, mouse wheel on pager and tasklist changes just like in the gnome 2 days.

Same here. Ubuntu 12.04, gnome classic without effects.

Thank you, quirky. With packages from your #7 comment I can navigate with mouse wheel like in 11.04.
Pinned packages, waiting for official ones.

Thanks quirky, this does indeed fix mousewheel scrolling to change programs on top in the windowlist (windowlistapplet) and the workspace switcher, when using fallback/classic in gnome3. (Commenting to add keywords, as this was hard to find from google..)

I recently installed 12.04 from latest CD-image. The bug is still here. Please fix it before 14.04 release.

Ubuntu 12.04.3 released and it's great!

But, guys, I can't understand why you not include quirky's patch to libwnck package. It's simple.
Mousewheel scrolling is very useful, but it's missed in 12.04.
