Bug Description

I have 1 monitor and an LCD TV arranged in as a dual monitor setup with an nvidia card.
Ubuntu's display preferences doesn’t recognise the monitors, so I have to use Nvidia settings.

The system works but with unity 3d windows keep poping in the monitor I'm not using. It's silly. Because I only turn on the TV when I want to see video, I can't use the system unless I have the other monitor on.

Because this is impractical I switched to Unity 2D were this behaviour doesn't happen.

Unity 3D should to open windows in the monitor with the focus, or at least give that choice.
This behavior also hapens in Ubuntu 11.10.

Compiz' window placement plugin I believe does default to placing all new windows on the current active monitor. However this is a problem with the proprietary NVIDIA driver, because that's one of the only drivers that treats all monitors as a single output. Because NVIDIA does not implement the Xrandr extension properly (but most other drivers do).

Please run "ccsm" and scroll down to Window Management > Place Windows. In there you will find a few options for controlling and customizing window placement.

No it's useless. With this setup, those ccsm options for window placement options are complitly ignored.

One other thing that bugs me is why the window placement or seems to work in unity 2d?

Unity-2D does not use compiz. So this is a compiz bug it seems.

Definitely a compiz bug. Using Nouveau and tested on Unity2D and gnome-shell, both of which do not use compiz.

There are certain windows that always open in the second monitor, many of which can be seen in this video: open/save dialogues, images (via Eye of Gnome), and the system settings (not pictured). Others, such as new terminals, videos (via totem), and new text documents open in the focused monitor. This is a small sample portion of windows opening on other screens.

Also, fiddling with CCSM on different placement options did nothing.
