spell check not working

under edit -> preferences -> advanced -> browsing -> i have checked "check my spelling as i type" on, yet every time i go to type spell check isn't working because the red swiggly line is not under the word i know are misspelled. so to correct this i have to make sure my cursor in a text box right click -> check mark "check spelling", then right click again and select -> languages -> english / united states. now i have to do this every every every every every every time. quite frankly it's getting annoying and pissing me off. i don't k now if it's a firefox issue or the way it's ported to ubuntu or what. i may just drop firefox altogether is this doesn't get fixed.

if i TURN ON spell checking it's ON! not some half-assed semi-on or could be off crap.
