blender icon does not work from sidebar

After installing blender succesfully i am not able to fire it up from blender icon on unity sidebar, I have made a desktop icon and have tried to integrate that onto the unity sidebar but with no success tho it does start the blender prog...how do I make the sidebar icon work I have tried several of the offerings of help found by google but my system does not seem to be compatible...anyone know what's happening?
