CPU frequency scaling causes crash

Each time I upgrade Ubuntu it installs something to manage CPU frequency scaling. However changes to the CPU frequency cause my system to crash (Seems to be solved this time by disabling gnome-power-manager).

Although disabling gnome-power-manager stops this from happening most of the time, it still happens when I log out and for some reason when I tell update-manager to install, as soon as I click on the install button (same acpi_pm entry in the syslog)

Try editing the grub boot command and add 'acpi=off'. Also, please attach (do not inline) the output of

sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.txt

Have you checked for BIOS updates for this motherboard?

I did update the BIOS a while back. Looking at Chaintech's site now it looks like they've merged with someone and stopped supporting their motherboards. The site only has driver downloads not BIOS updates.

I'll try disabling acpi now.

Adding 'acpi=off' to the end of the kernel params in grub (after 'ro quiet splash') stops the system completing it's boot. I end up dumped into a busybox shell.

There's nothing obvious in the syslog from that. I did see something about module symbols not being found though.

On page 2 miguelquiros has posted a workaround which involves setting cpufrequtils to "conservative". Although this obviously has the side effect of slowing down the machine slightly.

Im getting the same bug. Ive just started trying miguel's workaround.

I am also experiencing crashes related to CPU frequency scaling. I have a dual core processor (Core 2 Duo E6600) and every time I run a heavy process the computer freezes once the process is finished and load goes to zero. If I run e.g. glxgears with nice 19 in the background, this does not occur. I can also fix this by saying

sudo chmod +s /usr/bin/cpufreq-selector

and setting both cores to "performance" (i.e. full frequency all the time). This happens both in edgy and feisty. However, one of the first Feisty alpha kernels did not have this bug. If I remember correctly it was 2.6.19-7.

My motherboard is Abit AB9 with latest BIOS. I also have another similar system, but with a different motherboard (Asus Commando). The second computer does not suffer from this bug.

This issue is still present and causes complete system crashes, how can it be low importance?

I still have to boot single user mode and remove cpufreqd and the frequency scaling on each new upgrade in order to be able stop the lock ups.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. At least in my case this was fixed with an updated BIOS. The BIOS changelog explicitly mentions "The "EIST adjusting" function now works as intended."

This was with Abit AB9 BIOS version 17.

I have had this bug for the past 3-4 releases. The problem goes away if I set the governor to performance. I assume it would also go away if I set it to conservative as in the above mentioned forum thread.

I am dissappointed that this bug has been marked as "low importance" and "won't fix". The problem still exists and it's quite serious, even if it seems to affect only to a limited number of people. Setting cpufreq_ac_policy to conservative in gnome-power-manager does not completely solve the problem. It simply makes it very less frequent. Obviously the hang happens when CPU frequency changes and these frequency changes are less frequent in "conservative" than in "ondemand".
