Download button whilst download list is hidden

Users sometimes get confused because the statusbar is hidden and they can't figure out where to find their downloads. We don't enforce showing the statusbar since there may be a valid reason to hide it. So maybe we want to show a button in the toolbar only when there's no statusbar and downloads are loading.

The icon should be emblem-downloads or folder-download.

It would be nice to indicate progress in the button, if we can keep it subtle. The spinner/ throbber is probably too ambiguous for this use case.

This proposal is may contribute to deprecating or removing the transfer panel.

Bumping this report. I'd really like to deprecate the downloads status bar in favor of a popover as in bug #1007227

But also this would be really helpful in any case that the downloads list was not shown, whether it's the status bar, panel, or a new popover.

Any reason this was marked as "won't fix" ?

The button was indeed intended to show downloads while other UI is hidden. However feedback on this proposal suggests it's more useful to dynamically show the bar as needed. And for people who dislike it, the panel can live on as an extension that disables the statusbar. So there's no need for a work-around like this button.

There never was a connection to pop-overs as far as this proposal goes. I suggest to re-consider the button as part of bug #1007227.
