Bug Description

caveat; I am an intermediate to casual user. i have been using 12.04 from the alpha stage. i burned and installed the beta yesterday. later, after checking for upgrades, i was offered a partial upgrade. when i selected that, i got a message saying update failed, because ubuntu-desktop wanted to be installed, but was blacklisted, yadyad, may be ar esult of prelease yadda yadda. the i got the bright idea of upradeing through synaptic . the update seemed to take, but this morning it booted into a desktop with no icons, not ubuntu desktop, no unity panel. i tried unity reset, with no luck. i opened synaptic and reinstalled unity. this retored, apparently my ubuntu desktop and my unityh panel, and that is when i got the compiz crash which intiated this bug.
