display locks up when a third finger touches the Apple Trackpad

This problem only seems to occur on my desktop where I have an Apple Trackpad, the multi-touch synaptic trackpads in both of my laptops, a Lenovo T410s and an HP dm1z, do not seem to cause this hang. I can use two fingers, which now seems to act as a middle-click, but if I try and use a third finger, everything hangs except the mouse pointer. I can get the mouse pointer to also hang for short periods by using more then 2 fingers on the trackpad in some long term fashion.
