Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

I'm using Kubuntu feisty (development branch) on x86_64 architecture.

First I had installed packages network-manager and knetworkmanager. Then I installed package network-manager-vpnc for connecting to VPN.
After reboot in knetworkmanager appeared new sub menu VPN connections with one enabled menu item "Configure VPN...". After selecting this item nothing happened.

With strace I found that result of selecting this menu item is start program nm-vpn-properties which was not installed.

After that I installed package network-manager-gnome and I found that missing binary is inside of this package.

I assumed that there is error in packaging network-manager-gnome and network-manager-vpnc and some files included in network-manager-gnome should be in network-manager-vpnc that it can work with knetworkmanager.

After configuring new VPN, this VPN connection did not appeared in knetworkmanager's menu even after reboot.

Installed packages:
knetworkmanager 0.1-0ubuntu9
network-manager 0.6.4-6ubuntu3
network-manager-gnome 0.6.4-6ubuntu3
network-manager-vpnc 0.6.4svn2422-0ubuntu2

VPN support will be available with the next version of knetworkmanager, but it's too late to get that in for feisty.
I reject the bug as it'll not be fixed now, but will be for sure during the next dev cycle.

Changed in knetworkmanager:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

Instead of rejecting, aren't there options in Launchpad to defer the bug for a future release, like Feisty + 1 ?

That way you can easily find the list of bugs for Feisty + 1 when you start work on it. And also the bug doesn't get lost.

BTW, this is an important bug and I suggest for keeping it open with a mark of "Target Release => Feisty + 1"

This is also a problem on the 32-bit version of feisty.

However, after installing network-manager-gnome, I was able to successfully add a VPN connection with knetworkmanager and it did show up in my "list" of VPN gateways to connect to (left click --> VPN connections --> connect to <vpn name>.)

I'm unsure if the original poster's problem is something related to 64-bit or not, I can try it on my 64-bit version of Kubuntu when I get home tonight, but installing network-manger-gnome solved the "nothing happens when I try to add a vpn connection" problem for me on 32-bit.
