Bug Description
Binary package hint: totem
I'm going to add this to the community howto if I can, but thought I'd pass it on as a feature request. I have a new laptop, and just installed Feisty Herd 5. After following the community howto for Feisty DVD playback, it wouldn't work (kept giving obscure IDE errors in /var/log/syslog). Totem just gave "Unable to read resource" when the DVD was inserted.
Turns out, because the laptop was new, and had never had a Windows DVD player activated on it, the region code on the laptops DVD drive had never been set. This caused the aforementioned errors. I installed regionset, ran it and set the region code to 1, and everything now works.
My suggestion is that totem and other media players check the region code, and give a meaningful error message rather than just failing in a bizarre way with a bunch of weird and misleading IDE messages in /var/log/syslog. It would have saved me about an hour of frantic googling.
FWIW, Feisty rocks!
