Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/948180/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Hello, I have reproduced the bug and attached the requested files. I think it's a problem in gnome-screensaver because of the last kern.log line:

This bug is still present in the release of Precise, and it not limited to nVidia cards (I have an ATI Radeon HD6870 using the binary driver). Exact same symptoms as the original reporter: computer is still alive and running, but all I havbe when this triggers is a black screen and a movable mouse cursor. I have to ctrl-alt-F1 and reboot to recover (restarting X isn't enough). I run XFCE and xscreensaver, not gnome, so clearly the problem is somewhere lower-level.

I find this happens mostly when I come back from suspend, but not always - sometimes it happens if I just leave the computer idle and in the screensaver for long enough.

while your symptoms sound similar, you're likely experiencing an unrelated issue. Please file a new bug for it using the command 'ubuntu-bug linux' (and a photo if any corruption is seen).

Just a note to Vanessa - I have this same problem on precise with ATI - if I leave the machine for a day or so when I come back I get the blank screen with just a mouse cursor issue.

Today I found that if you just wait - on the order of 4-5 minutes - the login prompt will eventually show up. Running top I found that chromium was taking up a lot of CPU, so I restarted it, but I'm not sure if that is related.

In any case, there is obviously something going on here but next time it happens wait and see if it eventually does present you with a password or a desktop screen.
