Bug Description

On a HP Proliant Microserver, I recently updated to 3.0.0-12 (I think from 3.0.0-9).

WOL previously worked. It is still enabled in BIOS. It is still enabled in NIC (ethtool). I've tried messing with the NETDOWN variable in /etc/init.d/halt.

I can confirm that the NIC is powered down, both the port light on the back of the box and the router extinguish where they previously did not.

I've tried compiling 3.0.0-9 checked out from git to give it another go but I'm not that good at compiling and I can't work out how to do it when not making a change (which is what all the guides expect).

WORKAROUND: ifconfig eth0 down; shutdown -h now

The latest kernel version for Oneiric(11.10) is: 3.0.0-16.28. Can you test the latest version?

You can update to the latest kernel for this release by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install linux

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Still a problem on 3.2.0-10, maybe I should buy support (HP Microserver) and call them.

Breakthrough!

Messing around with netdown in /etc/init.d/halt is a waste of time.

Shutting down like this:
ifconfig eth0 down; shutdown -h now

WORKS!

If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and just provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.
