Bug Description

I'm running Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 8600.

When I close the lid (push the lid button), the entire laptop freezes. I do not
have this problem with gentoo on a 2.6.8.1-mm2
kernel. I've traced it down to the kernel because it happens even before the
acpid is started.

Dell laptops seem to have a lot of BIOS problems :-/

Doesn't happen in either windows or the mm kernel, so I guess it's a problem in
the Ubuntu kernel that has been fixed in the mm one (as a matter of fact, I
never used a plain 2.6.8.1 on either of the Dell laptops here, always used an mm
one)

Please attach /var/log/dmesg from the ubuntu kernel as well as mm. When you
press the lid button, can you please make sure that you're on the text console
instead of X? That way if any messages come up on the screen you can see it.

The mm kernel (on my I8600 gentoo laptop) gives me nothing, acpid however logs this:

[Sat Oct 23 09:42:04 2004] received event "button/lid LID 00000080 00000004"
[Sat Oct 23 09:42:04 2004] notifying client 8938[1000:100]
[Sat Oct 23 09:42:04 2004] executing action "/etc/acpi/default.sh button/lid LID
00000080 00000004"
[Sat Oct 23 09:42:04 2004] BEGIN HANDLER MESSAGES
[Sat Oct 23 09:42:04 2004] END HANDLER MESSAGES
[Sat Oct 23 09:42:04 2004] action exited with status 0
[Sat Oct 23 09:42:04 2004] completed event "button/lid LID 00000080 00000004"

On the Ubuntu kernel (my sister's laptop), I can't see anything, it immediately
locks up. She had gentoo too before and it didn't pose a problem there.

Nothing happens in dmesg, when I press the lid button, it still freezes.

Please boot ubuntu with nolapic and see if that helps.

Screen fades out, screensaver kicks in. Works perfectly with this.

Does this have any disadvantages? Or can I safely add this to the boot
parameters permanently

No you shouldn't really need LAPIC, especially when your BIOS has it disabled by
default. This will be fixed soon.
