Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The message I get is:

-------
Could not load document

The Uniform Resource Identifier ‘file:///usr/share/gnome/help/desktop-effects/C/desktop-effects.xml%23compiz-install’ is invalid or does not point to an actual file.
-------

This is after searching Yelp for 'Desktop effects'. Selecting the link to 'Desktop Effect' itself and not the section linked to in the above URL works fine.

Thanks for the report. I can't reproduce your search results for some reason, searching for "desktop effects" doesn't give me that document, disturbingly.

In any case, I think this is a Yelp bug - opening that url and replacing the %23 with a # sign seems to work fine.

I can confirm this in the current rev of Feisty by performing the search and selecting any of the returned links that have the text "from Desktop Effects" after them. Like Matthew, replacing the %23 with # brings joy.

This seems a wide spread problem. Using the search "F-spot" and selecting the links in the results that have the text "from The F-Spot Manual" all fail with the same %23 vs. # issue.

Seems a Yelp search issue.

Why is this such a low priority - the problem seems to be very clearly described, and whatever the cause is shouldn't be that hard to fix - it's just a link - and they worked fine earlier! Surely we want to fix this before Feisty release?

(Yes I read the upstream bug, I reported it!) I'm disappointed that Feisty was released without a fix of any kind that I've noticed.
I've added the latest to the gnome bug report.

Altough i am a veteran on unix like systems, some sort of first directions would be very helpfull (something like `man afterboot` in OpenBSD).

This broken help page sure turns away novice linux users. It leaves the feeling of unprofessionallity. Not much work to fix, big effect on gaining acceptance from new users and this is low priority?

Enough ranting. I really like Ubuntu. Most ubuntu users are geeks, but not all of them. Propper documentation (especially first steps) should not be underestimated.

Kind Regards,

So I don't see "Desktop Effect" in yelp anymore. As of Karmic I see that it mush be replaced with "Visual Effects". This link works fine for me.

Is this bug still happening in Jaunty for anyone? I'm using yelp 2.27.1. If not, it should be closed. Thanks.

The actual cause of this bug was because the link was to a section of a page, see the upstream report. marking as duplicate of #138777
