Subject: hplip bonjour breaks for some hp printers (e.g. Photosmart D110a)
Date: Mon, 30 May 2011 06:47:31 -0400
Package: hplip
Version: 3.11.1-3
Severity: normal

I have a HP Photosmart D110a wireless printer and in the process of getting it working across subnets, noticed the following:

1) the printer reports it's hostname name as Adriana.local (note the capital)
2) using hp-toolbox to setup the printer using Bonjour/mDNS is successful, however printing the test page fails as does scanning.

The logs show:

May 30 04:32:17 daniloth hpijs[28698]: io/hpmud/jd.c 800: mdns lookup Adriana.local retry 1...
May 30 04:32:17 daniloth hp[28661]: io/hpmud/jd.c 800: mdns lookup Adriana.local retry 1...
May 30 04:32:17 daniloth hp[28661]: io/hpmud/jd.c 334: unable to connect to print port 9100: Connection refused hp:/net/Photosmart_D110_series?zc=Adriana
May 30 04:32:17 daniloth hp[28661]: prnt/backend/hp.c 768: ERROR: cannot open channel PRINT
May 30 04:32:17 daniloth python: io/hpmud/jd.c 790: error mdns lookup Adriana.local: bad hostname in reply from ip=192.168.173.62 port=5353

3) The ports are open, and I can even telnet adriana.local 9100 and type arbitrary text, and when I close the telnet session it's printed. So it's not firewall/routing/etc issue.

4) Using manual discovery and using adriana (lowercase) doesn't help, but if instead of a hostname I use the IP of the printer (so hp:/net/Photosmart_D110_series?zc=192.168.199.22) printing and scanning work.

5) Bonjour/avahi is working correctly for other services I use.

My guess at this point is that the capital letter in the printer's hostname (even though the hostname as entered/seen in the web interface is lowercase, except that the Bonjour information (which can't be changed) shows the Adriana.local) break HPLIP's mDNS code.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball
(.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm,
etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above
cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Hi,

Can you please upgrade the hplip version to 3.12.2 (the latest) available at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html. Download the hplip-3.12.2.run file and install it by running command "sh hplip-3.12.2.run".

Delete the existing print queues for this printer in "system-config-printer" and setup/configure the printer using command "hp-setup". Check if the issue is the same on the latest.

Thanks,
Goutam
