Launcing programs from gnome is very slow.

Ubuntu 6.10-desktop-i386 with latest updates as of March 18, 2007.
Motherboard is Asus M2NPV-VM
CPU is AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Samsung HD160JJ SATA hard drive

Running any X application is very slow. This is true whether it is being run from a desktop icon, a menu
or GNOME Terminal. It take 10-20 seconds to start even the smallest program. Running non-X applications
is very fast.

I had previously installed 6.06 .1-desktop-AMD64 on the same hardware and did not see this problem.

Hi Rick,

This sounds like a problem I had with the same version of Edgy. The solution was to edit /etc/hosts and comment out all the IPv6 entries that are auto-populated during install.

Are you able to run the apps normally if you are connected to any kind of wired network? Because I have a similar problem since edgy. If I am connected to some wired network my apps and system bootup everything is fine. Otherwise Apps become very slow and sluggish, Desktop appearance after gdm takes helluva lot of time and so on.

In my case, it doesn't seem to matter whether I am connected to the
network or
not. Starting a new app from Gnome is very slow.

Rick - can you verify that your machine hostname is listed in your /etc/hosts file? It should appear similar to this:

127.0.0.1 localhost macbook
127.0.1.1 macbook

If your machine only shows localhost on the first line try appending your hostname. This has been shown to make a difference.

Also, are you running the 64bit kernel? 32bit? What Ubuntu release and kernel version are you running please?
