Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Totem on Feisty Herd 5 (+ apt-get dist-upgrade) cannot play the attached ASF, although Feisty automagically installs some codecs when trying. It can be perfectly played by mplayer though.

Totem does not even present an error, but "just hangs there" with no picture and no sound.

I have exactly the same problem here, after installing Herd 5 anew via netboot.
The url below plays in mplayer 1.0rc1 but not in totem:

 totem "http://playervideo.globo.com/webmedia/GMCMidiaASX?midiaId=654705|banda=N|ext.asx"
** Message: Couldn't initialize lirc.

** Message: Error: Could not connect to this stream
gstmms.c(317): gst_mms_start (): /play/source

This seems to have been fixed upstream:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=403188

Is it possible to get this fix into Feisty?

The changes look non trivial, not something we want to use now, might be a candidate to updates later

Well, the annoyance is that possibly no one can view any videos taken by a camera bought by ALDI, Germans largest discounter. At least not my mother, who is sad that she can't watch their grandchilds. Opening a command line, cd'ing to the right directory and using mplayer is no workaround for her (too complicated). I tried to associate .ASF with mplayer through Gnome, but this does not work either (hangs, too).

I'd vote for an update, but of course a more biased decision should be made.
