You are correct, there is a typo in /etc/menu-methods/menu-xdg,
the line
prerun = "rm -rf " prefix() "/*";
should be removed. It is probably here due to an unlucky copy-pasting.

I reassign the bug to menu-xdg.

Thanks for your bug report,

menu-xdg maintainers: I offer to NMU this package if you lack time.

Cheers,

Subject: update-menus removes ~user/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu

Package: menu
Version: 2.1.18

I've used kmenuedit (version 3.3.0-1) to update my KDE3.3 menus, modifying
submenus adding items and so on. When I've done this my changes is saved
in ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu (I'm not running as root).
But when I run /usr/bin/update-menus the file applications-kmenuedit.menu
is removed and my changes are lost.

Example:
$ ls -l .config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu
-rw-r--r-- 1 eniklas eniklas 9250 Oct 21 21:48 .config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu
$ update-menus
$ ls -l .config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu
ls: .config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu: No such file or directory

$ dpkg -s libc6 | grep ^Version

Hi Bill.

You offered to do an NMU to fix #277698 in menu-xdg. Unless you heard
something from the maintainer that isn't recorded in the bug report, I
guess it is time to proceed.
