There is a newer version of the Oneiric kernel available[0]. Can you update to the latest kernel and report back if the bug still exists? You can upgrade just your kernel by running the following from a terminal:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux

Martin Shea, as per http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/Product/dimension-4550 an update is available for your BIOS (A08). If you update to this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.
