Are you able to reproduce this issue easily? If so, please collect a full backtrace - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions. If not, could you describe the conditions under which the crash tends to occur?

This sounds similar to a bug I looked at recently where very large images would crash the server. What were the dimensions or file size on the picture you were trying to open? Is the picture something you could attach or provide a url to?

It was a pretty large picture, yes, 4k pixels or more, although I can't seem to find it to reproduce :(
