Running synaptic after upgrading to the latest and it crashed immediately. Running under Parallels on a macbook.

It was just that one time. I've run it several time since and had no
problems. Sorry I can't give you any more info.

Running Lucid 10.04 Alpha 1 on Dell Vostro 1000, AMD 64 X2.

This affected me too but only on the first usage. The error message, which I copied to the paste buffer, was lost. I followed the error message's instruction to run sudo dpkg --configure -a and all has been well since.

Never seen this problem with releases.

Thanks for following up. I'm closing this report due to original reporter comment, regarding it is not reproducible and not an issue anymore.
@PeggySue, your issue was different and likely due to an interrupted/failed package installation. If you're experiencing it again, then use the bug reporting tool (apport) to report that bug as it will collect the necessary information.
Don't hesitate to submit any new bug.
