Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

Thunderbird segmentation faults after startup (3 pane window shown for a second, then crash)

This is on Ubuntu 6/06 with
mozilla-thunderbird:
  Installed: 1.5.0.10-0ubuntu0.6.06
  Candidate: 1.5.0.10-0ubuntu0.6.06

Since this happened after a upgrade on 2007-03-10 with dozens of packages upgraded (round about 4-6 weeks worth of an update) *and* the problem remains even if downgrading thunderbird to 1.5.9 I think the problem is related to another updated package. I would like to attach {s,l}traces but have trouble with launchpad. If I'm not able to attach the files I will email them to John Vivirito.

1.
my bug has nothing to do with corrupt profile since every time I reproduce it here I rm -rf /home/grfz/.mozilla-tunderbird

2.
my bug has nothing to do with a extension or theme which causes the crash since it also happens if I deinstall the only extension I use: mozilla enigmail. For the following examples I purged it again.

3.
I followed the procedure described in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash8, section "Prior Ubuntu versions". The following examples and the to be attached {s,l}traces files are produced with thunderbird from this debug enabled packages. There is *no* crash report in /var/crash.
This is the contents of mozilla-thunderbird_1.5.0.10-0ubuntu0.6.06_i386.changes as produced with aforementioned procedure:

Here is how I produced the attached strace and ltrace outputs with the above mentioned debug enabled thunderbird:

I modified /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/run-mozilla.sh in line 166 to start thunderbird as follows:
strace -o /home/grfz/mozilla-thunderbird-strace.root "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

I started thunderbird like this:

grfz@pingu:~$ sudo rm -rf /home/grfz/.mozilla-thunderbird/; sudo mozilla-thunderbird
DOUBLE-CLICK: 400 --> -1 THRESHOLD: 8 --> -1 DOUBLE-CLICK: 400 --> -1 THRESHOLD: 8 --> -1 grfz@pingu:~$

--> configuration wizard --> 3 pane window --> no crash; find attached mozilla-thunderbird-strace.root.

I modified /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/run-mozilla.sh in line 166 to start thunderbird as follows:
strace -o /home/grfz/mozilla-thunderbird-strace.grfz "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

I started thunderbird like this:

grfz@pingu:~$ sudo rm -rf /home/grfz/.mozilla-thunderbird/; mozilla-thunderbird
DOUBLE-CLICK: 400 --> -1 THRESHOLD: 8 --> -1 DOUBLE-CLICK: 400 --> -1 THRESHOLD: 8 --> -1 grfz@pingu:~$

--> configuration wizard --> 3 pane window --> crash; find attached mozilla-thunderbird-strace.grfz.

I modified /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/run-mozilla.sh in line 166 to start thunderbird as follows:
ltrace -o /home/grfz/mozilla-thunderbird-ltrace.grfz "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

I started thunderbird like this:

grfz@pingu:~$ sudo rm -rf /home/grfz/.mozilla-thunderbird/; mozilla-thunderbird

--> nothing happens find attached mozilla-thunderbird-ltrace.grfz.

 modified /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/run-mozilla.sh in line 166 to start thunderbird as follows:
ltrace -o /home/grfz/mozilla-thunderbird-ltrace.root "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

-> nothing happens find attached mozilla-thunderbird-ltrace.root

I'm attaching traces.tar.bz2, it contains the 4 files mentioned in last post. If it doesn't show up, I will email it to John Vivirito.

I finally build apport_0.28 (apport from etchy) on this Ubuntu 06.06 LTS from source, manualy resolving several build-dependencies, installed it, forced preloading of libapport.so, run sudo rm -rf /home/grfz/.mozilla-thunderbird/; mozilla-thunderbird and produced a crash report which I now will try to upload. If upload fails I will mail it to John Vivirito.

A friend of mine looked at the traces and proposed to move away the Tahoma font files. I did so and now thunderbird does not crash any more.

I "installed" this font files, i. e. I copied them to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/:
~$ sudo ls -l /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/[Tt][Aa][Hh]*
-r-xr-x--- 1 root root 355436 2006-12-13 15:16 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Tahomabd.ttf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2006-12-13 15:20 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/tahoma_bold.ttf ->Tahomabd.ttf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2006-12-13 15:20 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/tahoma.ttf -> Tahoma.ttf
-r-xr-x--- 1 root root 383140 2006-12-13 15:16 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Tahoma.ttf

I installed the tahoma font files last year but thunderbird blow off after the last system upgrade at 2007-03-10. Removing the tahoma font files is no real solution for me, since I really would like to use them.

I experienced the same problem with the same exactly symptoms, besides that the crash file was created. Removal of Tahoma fonts helped, thanks to Gregor.

Will anyone need the .crash for investigation?

I think it has to do with some part of the X server, but I do not know which part, therefore I do not know, where to file this bug.

Hi, sorry my english.. hehe

I also had this error, and believe to be something related to new wine wine.
Since i upgrade wine to version 0.9.35, gaim and thunderbird had presented problems..
I upgrade tahoma.ttf font and my thunderbird run normaly..

Is this still an issue for you? We are trying to sort this issue and would like to know if this still happens.

If so, would you mind to attach the last full crash report you got.

Thanks in advance.

Yes. This system isn't mine, therefore I'm seldom able to check
for the existence of this bug. But as of today, the bug
persists. It's a resonable uptodate Ubuntu 06.06 system.

Yes it is. Half an hour ago I upgraded the system (Ubuntu 6/06). Thunderbird still crashes with Tahoma fonts installed:

Closing the bug due to lack of comments in little more than a year. This is not reproducible for me in my dapper system.
If you are still seeing this issue with a fully updated dapper please reopen with the info needed so we can further help you. I would also say this is a font issue more than a thunderbird issue however tbird shouldnt crash do to a font.
