Bug Description

Sorry if this ends up being a duplicate of any other bug, but I searched through all similar issues and none seems to match the problem that occurs on my system.

Sometimes when I start thunderbird (via unity launcher) it hangs consuming 100% cpu. The thunderbird window is visible then but completely empty. The menus are already there but not filled with any menu items. This lasts endless as far as I could see.

If I look for the thunderbird processes there are actually two "thunderbird-bin", one being the child of the other one:

oliver 31023 1 1 14:39 ? 00:00:04 /usr/lib/thunderbird-9.0/thunderbird-bin
oliver 31025 31023 98 14:39 ? 00:05:52 /usr/lib/thunderbird-9.0/thunderbird-bin

If I kill the dependent process (31025 in this example) thunderbird suddenly starts as expected and the CPU traffic is gone.

The same sometimes happens with firefox, sometimes even while this is already running ok. I sometimes can trigger this behaviour by clicking an internet link in some other application (Gwibber for example), which will let an existing firefox open another tab. After that there are multiple processes of "firefox", the original one and the one that wants to open the clicked link. The new tab actually opens and loads the URL correctly, but the separate process remains consuming 100% cpu.

If I then stop and start firefox again I have the same "empty window hang" like on thunderbird.

is this still an issue with thunderbird 12 installed by default now?
can this be merged with the following bug:

thunderbird uses excessive cpu power

Haven't seen this issue since upgrading to precise. However, hard to say if this problem is over now as it always was shown up sporadicly.

I don't think that Bug #927515 describes the same issue, as Thunderbird doesn't generally consume CPU. But when this problem shows it always consumes 100% of one CPU constantly. Additionally the UI is frozen, which is not described on this bug.
