Bug Description

Kubuntu 11.10 amd64,
update-manager-core: Installed: 1:0.152.25.6

http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?57044-Upgrading-11-10-to-12-04 recommended `sudo do-release-upgrade -f kde -d` , so I tried it.

% sudo do-release-upgrade -f kde -d
Checking for a new ubuntu release
Get:1 Upgrade tool signature [198 B]
Get:2 Upgrade tool [1410 kB]
Fetched 1410 kB in 0s (0 B/s)
authenticate 'precise.tar.gz' against 'precise.tar.gz.gpg'
extracting 'precise.tar.gz'
can't load kde (No module named kde)

and the Gnome "Distribution Upgrade" UI appears.

I'm not sure what's going on, but precise.tar.gz has a "./DistUpgradeViewKDE.py" file.

Sorry, now that I've upgraded I don't know how to get the upgrade UI to show up:
  % sudo do-release-upgrade -f kde -d
  Checking for a new Ubuntu release
  No new release found

I hope someone can retry it one way or another from within an 11.10 KDE session. I asked for someone to test it in that Kubuntu Forums thread that suggested this command, http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?57044-Upgrading-11-10-to-12-04&p=288819#post288819

Same here:

# do-release-upgrade -d -f kde
Checking for a new ubuntu release
Get:1 Upgrade tool signature [198 B]
Get:2 Upgrade tool [1408 kB]
Fetched 1408 kB in 0s (0 B/s)
authenticate 'precise.tar.gz' against 'precise.tar.gz.gpg'
extracting 'precise.tar.gz'
can't load kde (No module named kde)

See attached strace. It is looking for module named kde.so or kde.py in various paths. I've no idea what kde.so/kde.py is, but indeed it is not to be found neither in precise.tar.gz nor on my 11.10 system. I tried searching for it through http://packages.ubuntu.com/ and failed to found it.

Testing it now. Do either of you have the gnome desktop installed as well? Or had it installed at one point?

Well I do get the "can't load kde (No module named kde)" error but it seems to load the KDE upgrade interface just fine after displaying that message.

@RedSingularity, thanks for testing.

I don't think I have the gnome desktop installed: `aptitude show gnome-desktop-environment` says it's not installed, and I have no gdm, no nautilus, etc. I can't remember in detail how the upgrade interface differed, I think the buttons looked different. It had my KDE window decorations like other Gnome programs do.

For the future readers: the frontend to use if you want a KDE interface seems to be DistUpgradeViewKDE. The other available frontends are DistUpgradeViewText, DistUpgradeViewGtk and DistUpgradeViewKDE. These should be specified in do-release-upgrade --help, but are only in DistUpgradeMain.py:

parser.add_option("--frontend", dest="frontend",default=None,
                      help=_("Use frontend. Currently available: \n"\
                             "DistUpgradeViewText, DistUpgradeViewGtk, DistUpgradeViewKDE"))
