Offer DRI/res/depth choice when needed

Bug Description

After installation, the xserver was correctly configured for a 3dfx Voodoo3 16MB
card. It chose a bit depth of 24, and resolution of 1280x1024.
However, at this resolution with only 16MB on the card, DRI cannot start, so
there was no accelerated 3d available.
It would be nice if the installer prompted when the maximum configurable
resolution does not allow DRI to start and offered other choices. In this case,
I wanted
1024x768 at 16bits colour depth for best output.

Yes, there are some situations where there is a tradeoff between colour depth,
resolution and 3D acceleration. It would be nice to be able to offer a choice
in these situations, though I think it would need to be after installation is
complete.

Looks reasonable, I suppose.

We need intimate knowledge (including probes) of the hardware to solve this one,
so I'm going to mark it as an NOTOURBUG (ok, NOTWARTY) until such time as the
X.Org X server can intelligently configure itself.

This comes up often enough that it should stay open; we'll call it an upstream

FWIW, for 6.8.1-1ubuntu11, we're defaulting to 16bpp on tdfx.

Hello,

Have you had a chance to test your hardware with dapper (a live CD perhaps)? If so are you still seeing this problem? Thanks.

Sorry nope - since I filed the bug, I've moved halfway around the world
and I had to leave that hardware behind. I've no way to reproduce it
these days, so if you think it's fixed, feel free to close :)

Cheers,
Jan.

I installed Dapper Flight 6 yesterday. It still configured X with 24 bit depth
and direct rendering didnt work. It didn't ask any questions.
I have a ATI Radeon Mobility M6 (See Bug #26393, a douplicate of this bug).

This still affects up-to-date Intreprid i386/Desktop. Please reopen

I have a Matrox G200 card. X comes up fine on first X startup when booting, ending up at a screen resolution
of 1024x768 (that is ok). However when logging out/restarting the X server I end up in what I believe is called "bulletproof X". It shows me the error message

(EE) MGA(0): Static buffer allocation failed, not initializing the DRI
(EE) MGA( 0): Need at least 9xxx kB video memory at this resolution

and asks on how to proceed. There is no way to recover except for a complete reboot.

Christian, that sounds like a driver bug, please file one against xserver-xorg-video-mga.
