unexpected black overlay

Bug Description

i'm not sure if this is my fault, but other generation methods result in the expected output.
the generated svg file contains a black overlay. The attached pdf, generated from the same dvi shows the expected output.

the dvi is generated from a metafont file with gftodvi

The "gray" font used by gftodvi is a special one. It contains pretty small characters with combinations of tiny dots. Because of their small extent, the tracer is unable to vectorize the glyphs properly. You can fix this manually by retracing the gray font at a larger magnification. To do so, delete file gray.fgd from ~/.dvisvgm/cache/ and run dvisvgm again with option -M16 for example.
