I'm using Feisty and i have tried 2.6.20.10 and 2.6.20.9, but i think when growisofs worked properly i was using 2.6.20.8.

I'm also getting the same error. I'm using Feisty (with all updates as of today). Kernel is 2.6.20-15-generic (2.6.20-15.27).

I doesn't matter what media I use (I've tried CDRW, DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD+R) or which application I use to burn (K3B, Brasero or Nautilus) the burn always fails. Sometimes straight away but more often after appearing to write for some time.

The drive itself is not faulty as it worked fine under gentoo a few weeks ago and burns ok now if I use a puppy linux live cd.

Although I've no direct proof I suspect that the new libata changes are the cause of the problem as in both my previous gentoo install and the puppy live cd the old style ide drivers are still used.

From a test burn with a DVD+RW using Brasero:

process (BraseroGrowisofs) stderr: :-[ WRITE@LBA=61c0h failed with SK=7h/ASC=00h/ACQ=01h]: Input/output error
process (BraseroGrowisofs) stderr: :-( write failed: Input/output error

well, I remember some testing about this issue.
Just check your devices' jumpers, and configuration on BIOS. I
actually don't remember the solution, so I hope this information can
help you. If not, don't hesitate on emailme.

Hi,

today I tried to burn a video dvd for the first time. Two times I used k3b, which utilises growisofs. The third time I created the ISO image manually with makeisofs and called growisofs on the command line.

$ growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvdrw2=mydvd.iso
Executing 'builtin_dd if=zeremonie.iso of=/dev/dvdrw2 obs=32k seek=0'
/dev/dvdrw2: "Current Write Speed" is 8.2x1352KBps.

I was having the exact same problem. What was even more strange is that I was able to burn some cd's and dvd's but not all of them, especially where I was burning a cd or dvd image. I remembered reading somewhere for the different burning applications to not put spaces in the filename. So this one dvd image I removed the spaces in the file name after I used up 2 blank dvd's and it worked.... might be your problem but that's what solved it for me. I was getting similar errors as everyone here.

Hope that helps.

I don't now, if there is a connection, but i commented out the lines in

/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules

After a reboot (the new lines in 70-persistent-cd.rules are same as the commented), i wrote 2 dvd (one dvd-rw, one dvd-r) without error.

So... don't realy now, what happend, but if you gets the same error, you may try...

I can't do more dvd write tests, 'cause just started an upgrade to lucyd beta 1.

I guess I'm having the same problem.
I'm trying to burn a DVD+R DL on my recorder and I get this error... I guess it happens only with dual layer midia.
My recorder:
$ cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: Optiarc Model: BD ROM BC-5500S Rev: 1.75
  Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 05
More info goes in the log file attached.

I was actually looking into this the other day because this problem was
getting so annoying to me. I found one bug thread someone (dont recall
the number) where one user switch the bios IDE mode from IDE to AHCI and
said that after doing so they were unable to get their SATA burner to
burn dual layers. It caught my attention only because I have done this
to my own bios config (and i was able to burn dual layers before) but i
havent had the chance to sit down and disable AHCI to see if it actually
fixes the issue. The other odd thing about this dual layer issue is that
at least for me, it seems to give out at around exactly the 4gb mark on
every dual layer burn attempt.

I was able to burn the same command on the exact same hardware and software setup after a reboot.
This is the second time I hit this bug in about five burn times. I cannot make a pattern yet.

When it happens, the drive in question is locked by the kernel and still spinning when it happens.
Only a cold reboot fixes this, "sudo reboot now" didn't help.

This is highly annoying, wasting an empty DVD and having to reboot!

hdparm also fails:
% sudo hdparm -d 0 /dev/sr0
/dev/sr0:
 setting using_dma to 0 (off)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
 HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

% sudo hdparm /dev/sr0
/dev/sr0:
 multcount = 0 (off)
 IO_support = 0 (default)
 readonly = 0 (off)
 readahead = 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Hi All(Solved in my case)

  - To Resolve Below Error related to my Sony DVD-RW Just Remove your DVD-RW player
  - Open it with the screwdriver(Its very Easy). Now you can see the Reader-Writer Lense .
  - Take any solution(Prefer Alcoholic or the solution you use it to clean LCD) and cotton.
  - Use a cotton swab and something like alcoholic solution(small) to gently wipe the lens. Just a quick scrub will do.
  - Dry the laser pickup lens with the other end of the swab.Keep it 10-15 Mins to dry that lens.
  - Do this carefully Please. I have done it on my own risk. you can also. below is the error
