Bug Description

I am using my kubuntu in a hostel network and for setting up samba so that my friends could see a file in my computer it took me days ( for the first time ). When my computer was opened on a network it asked for a username and password which even I did not know.

I believe there some way should be found out to make this less tedious. in samba configuration there are so many options that one gets lost if he does not know the exact steps. also it could be sorted out by providing proper documentation of steps to be followed for certain common types of networks which one connects to.
My samba still doesn't work grt.

(By the way subiraj, if you know why you reported the bug on the "malone" software instead of the Kubuntu software, please explain it to us in bug 88818. Thanks!)

Could you describe in more detail what you tried to do? Did you use some KDE GUI tools for this (the Gnome ones are fairly simple) or did you use the config files?

The gnome tools are simple, but they are completely useless for sharing with windows machines until the security model is changed from "user" to "share" in smb.conf. Otherwise, there is an impassable password prompt whenever a user on a windows machine tries to access a samba share. It's been like this for at least the last 3 releases of Ubuntu, and I keep having to figure out what to change in smb.conf whenever I get bitten by this issue, which is at least twice now.
