Garbled names when creating an address list

I created a new contact list. I added members to the list by typing in their names, pressing enter when the autocomplete got the whole address, then pressing OK at the bottom. Retrieving the list shows garbled names/addresses when it is displayed in the Contacts window. Attempts to mail to the garbled list result in a very angry e-mail server because the actual addresses seem to be garbled, not just the display of the information.
