Bug Description

I didn't find this bug in launchpad, I hope it hasn't been reported.
Well this is quite simple, I don't have the new overlay picture in which unity shortcuts should be displayed.
I'm under an updated ubuntu 12.04 Precise.

I think it should because of my screen resolution : 1024*600

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/922979/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

that won't fix. the height of the overlay does not fit the netbook screen so the plan was to not show it there.

So anyone with a netbook has no possibility to see, how things are working in Unity? Sorry, but that's poor design. Why isn't the overlay scrollable or scalable?

A similar problem occurs if the screen is to big: text feels cramped and is truncated. See bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/924842
I think it should really scale so that every new user can see it. Maybe every 200px steps are enough, it doesn't have to be freescaling.

Could we otherwise get a hint to a help page if there is no scalable way?

Marking invalid as the overlay is not interactive and there are currently no plans to design a smaller version just for netbook screens. However patches can be submitted to the design team (which would need design signoff before it could land).

This is a very sad decision!
The LVM Versicherung in Germany runs 10.000 Netbooks with Ubuntu LTS. So they there no so technical staff with the netbooks won't see the help display. Not to speak of all the normal users like me.

I initially reported the absence of the shortcut overlay as a bug as that is what it appeared to be.

Either amend the shortcut overlay so that it will display on netbook screens, display an alternative version or point the user to a web or help page where this information can be found.

It is not acceptable for nothing at all to be displayed.

This bug is not "invalid" or even "opinion". It is obviously a bug, even if it is by design, and even if it is low priority for Canonical.

Good to know.
That decision proofs that Unity / Ubuntu is and wasn't designed for Netbooks.

I run Ubuntu 12.04 on an HTPC with a 720p TV screen. Again no Unity hint overlay when I hold the Super key.

As seeing the overlay is the expected behaviour, I'd say its absence without explanation (even if by design) is a bug.

Hi,

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on an Asus K53S that it´s not a netbook ( actually screen resolution is 1366 x 768) and I am having the same problem too.

Funny thing is that when I run Ubunto from a CD the overlay appears without problem, it is when the system is installed that the overlay does not show.

I am a new user of linux. I just changed from windows and when I tried the CD and saw the overlay I was really happy since that really helps a lot to learn how to move in Ubuntu. The overlay going away when Ubuntu is fully installed is a real disappointment that does not make my life easy :(

@mcomputo; that is definitely a bug, it should be displayed. Could you report a new bug on ayatana-design ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+filebug ) describing your issue? Thanks!

My notebook has a 1366x768 screen - it is a very common resolution. When I boot Ubuntu 14.04 liveISO the keyboard shortcuts overlay is displayed and works very well - therefore my screen resolution is good enough for it. But after I installed 14.04 on my hard disk, the shortcuts overlay does not show anymore. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/1317869

Have you enabled the workspaces? In that case the overlay might not fit the resolution.

This one is killing me. I also use 1366x768, but I remember seeing the shortcut display once, so I couldn't figure out how I broke it! Once I saw this thread, I realized that I've only seen it on the TV display, so I plugged in my HDMI cable to the big TV screen. I still can't get it to display.

I also think this is definately a bug. Especially since it seems to be inconsistent and confusing for the users. At the very least its piss poor design.
