Bug Description

Binary package hint: hpijs

I'm using ubuntu feisty beta. My printer is a hp laserjet 1010. I have added the printer as usual, from the menu printers and selected the recomended driver hpijs. It only prints error pages:

PCL XL error
  subsystem: KERNEL
  error: IllegalTag
  Operator: 0xfe
  Position: 0

I suppose this is a problem with hpijs, because the gutenprint driver works.

The hpijs driver worked in edgy.

Alfonso, can you try this PPD file:

http://openprinting.org/ppd-o-matic.cgi?driver=pxl1010&printer=HP-LaserJet_1010

Does it work for you?

Don, seems that the HPIJS part for the LaserJet 1010/1012 has broken down with the time. Can you check and fix this?

The link that you posted doesn't work, I went to openprinting and took
the hpij driver for the 1010 there, supposing it was the one you were
referring to...

http://openprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=hpijs

I tried to install it from gnome-printer-manager. The first time it seem
to take the driver, but then added no printer, next time it reported
that the driver was already installed, so I went to
/usr/share/ppd/cups-included/HP, moved the drivers there and moved the
downloaded driver there... Now I have the printer but it still fails
printing with the same error message...

Went to System/HPLIP_Toolbox, but that fails to start...

The link to the PPD file works for me when clicking it in Firefox (or any other browser). If you have tried to click in the e-mail notification it can be that your mail client did not recognize this URL correctly. So download by clicking the link a browser.

Or go to OpenPrinting and look up the driver "pxl1010". Load the PPD file from that driver entry. This PPD file is NOT for the HPIJS driver.

Ok, I have tried the driver in the PPD file, but still doesn't work.

Can you replace your file

/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/hpijs.xml

by the attached one and then delete your print queue and create a new one? Does your printer print correctly then?

Another question: Is your machine 32-bit (i386) or 64-bit (amd64/x86_64)?

The bug was investicated at HP and fixed upstream in the foomatic-db-hpijs package. The OpenPrinting web site is currently updated so that PPD files with the fix will get generated.

Probably your printer will work now with the hpijs.xml or the PPD attached to this bug report.

But as the upstream maintainer of the OpenPrinting database I would also like to know whether this alternative PPD file works.

http://openprinting.org/ppd-o-matic.cgi?driver=pxl1010&printer=HP-LaserJet_1010

Which one of the two would you recommend?

Did you -in ubuntu- recently changed the .ppds or something? After trying the attached ppd, I wanted to reproduce yet another time the bug. So I uninstalled cups, the openprintdrivers, hpij, hplip, etc. Then I reinstalled at the standard driver seems to work perfectly now.

I'm wonder if all this could be due to some bad upgrade, because I have made a dist-upgrade from edgy to feisty (not used an .iso). Anyway, when upgrading I allways take the new versions of configuration files, so it's very strange.

The attached .ppd worked almost perfect. The draft option, if it should have the same effects as in the old driver "toner saving", is not working. Enabled or not, the quality is the same. And the last ppd that you attached (http://openprinting.org/ppd-o-matic.cgi?driver=pxl1010&printer=HP-LaserJet_1010) worked as expected to be, as the old driver that I used in edgy. So I would recommend the last one.

But anyway, was the bug erroneous?

Till, I have just installed the beta for amd64 on a free partition (I was using in the other partition the 32 bits version).

I can't reproduce the bug, the printer works with the driver shipped with the cd without problems.

It is on its way to Feisty now.

My LaserJet 1010 is also not working anymore. I get no errormessage. The status windows says Job-printing but it doesn't. If I don't cancel the job it will be in the status Job-printing forever.
With the Update Manager I just got a new foomatic-db-hpijs package. I guess it's the one from yesterday you are referring to here above. It still doesn't work.

I installed feisty beta and Update at least once a day.
