12.04 - Multi-monitor setup breaks and reverts to mirror setup randomly several times a day

Bug Description

About once a day at random times my dual screen multimonitor setup suddenly goes black and then reverts back to mirror setup. Mostly it occurs while watching flash videos in my browser but yesterday it happened while no videos were playing and I just tried to click on the messaging menu indicator applet.

This happens on Unity 3d and 2d

Using the nouveau driver, have not tried the prop nvidia drivers. Don't really want to as I do not want to use nvidia's buggy multimonitor setup tool. I would like to get the built in Ubuntu display manager working right. Especially since new work is being done to make it work really well in many different test cases

Thanks

Additional issues have arisen since the latest update and while in unity 3d. Before the update when I had to fix the screen, after it randomly switched back to mirror, the launcher was always draw about 2/3 of the screen. Likeit was stuck at a lower res. Now that issue no longer occurs BUT now the indicator applets are not functioning properly. When I click messaging the MEmenu comes up, in fact the Me menu comes up when you click on almost any indicators, only sometime does the correct indicator menu open. Very annoying to have to log out and in again all day long when this screen does this

Typically behavior such as you describe is due to gnome-settings-daemon crashing.

The issues you describe in comment #2 sound like Unity issues and should be reported separately.

affects: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) → gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)

HI thanks for the response.

In fact today when it happened a pop-up came up saying it was compiz that crashed. I could not report that crash as I had issue with missing packages. I have installed the pkgs now and hopefully next time I can report it.

The indicator applet issue seem to have been fixed in a recent update, at this time, after compiz crash, my indicator is working fine.

Hi,

any update on the gnome-settings-daemon crash, this issue is happening 2-3 times a day and sometimes I have to reboot and loose work!

This bug is not a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/924612 as per Sebastian at that bug.

Please could this be investigated further as this has been occurring since 12.04 started development.

These are the errors that pop up when the setup breaks:

Would like to add that this does not just happen while watching fullscreen videos, it happens completely randomly now. While watching videos, opening an app, clicking on dash or panel, or just moving the mouse.

It kind of looks like the display is detected as disconnected briefly for whatever reason, does unplugging then replugging the monitor restore the old settings or does it revert to mirrored setup too?

That usually crashes everything on the screen, yet i can still ssh to my laptop and reboot it there. Nothing brings the screen back on again. When it doesn't crash I think it reverts is back to mirror, I'll have to check again. But yeah, usually I end up rebooting

psypher, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
