No option to disable tap-to-click

I installed Feisty on my new 640m Dell laptop and the tap-to-click was ON on Synaptics. But there is no GUI option to change that anywhere! There should be a new tab on the gnome-mouse panel and have a checkbox about enabling/disabling the tap-to-click, because this is the No1 option people with laptops want regarding the touchpad. First the tap-to-click (to enable or disable, depending on their preference) and believe it or not, wheel scroll support comes second.

BTW, in xorg.conf's synaptics section this would disable tap to click:
 Option "MaxTapTime" "0"
but this must also be done in a GUI, integrated to the gnome's mouse panel.

Thank you for your bug. That's known upstream: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324612. The GNOME capplet doesn't modify the xorg configuration though

Maybe we can include a graphical touchpad configuration tool (like http://gsynaptics.sourceforge.jp/) in the default Ubuntu instalation.

Actually no. What I am asking for is a new tab in the gnome preference mouse panel that controls tap-to-click and scroll-wheel on/off on touchpads. I don't want a separate panel and I definitely don't want gsynaptics which is simply too buggy to be used. Gnome has way too many panels already as it is and Control Center does not fix the problem or take that fact away. It feels like Vista's control-panel which is full of icons. Similar actions must be teamed together, e.g. keyboard and keyboard shortcuts. Similarly, the touchpad controls should just be written from scratch to go to the Gnome mouse panel.

I Agree with Eugenia. Don't add gsynaptic. This should probably be fixed in the upstream Gnome rather than in Ubuntu, but there is of course nothing if some capable Ubuntu developer gave the Gnome team a hand.

This problem can cause _very annoying_ data loss by selecting text by accident and typing over it. Fixing this properly requires a spec and some development, and should be a feature target for Hardy.
