Thanks for filing this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Before a developer can work on this bug we need some more information.

What tool were you using that gave you this error message?

Can you provide more details about what you were doing when you received the error, if you have steps to reproduce it, that will help.

@mfisch, I have this error too, when I try to backup to Ubuntu One with Deja-Dup.

When clicking on Backup button on Deja-Dup dialog, after some time preparing the backup, Deja-Dup returns this error message.

Same problem here on Ubuntu 12.04. normal backups to the file system work fine. Ubuntu One backups to the "default" folder (~/deja-dup/[computername]) seem to work as well.

I did set a directory inside the "Ubuntu One" folder (~/Ubuntu One/backups/deja-dup/[computername]) which then resulted in the "Code 401" error. Don't want my home folder to be cluttered with even more directories. Maybe it doesn't check for the entered folder already being inside an Ubuntu One folder? Would be nice if this error could give a bit more information.

As a solution for me I did select the "Local Folder" option and set the location to a folder inside the Ubuntu One directory. Problem with this is that it doesn't check for the Ubuntu One size limits and basically fills the directory till my harddrive is full. Otherwise it would delete old backups to free up space as soon as the Ubuntu One limits are reached.

I also have this problem. Running Ubuntu 11.10, with the latest version of Firefox, Nvidia graphics card. Somehow I've ended up with a 'deja-dup...' folder inside my Ubuntu One folder, plus a separate deja-dup...' folder beside Ubuntu One in my cloud folders.

I have Deja-Dup set to backup every week. It tries for a long time, then I get a little screen that simply says the backup failed, code 401. I have no idea how to fix this. Help...?

I also have this bug present in Ubuntu 12.04 when trying to create a fresh backup using Ubuntu's bundled Deja Dup backup system. The error only has occurred while attempting to upload to Ubuntu One, a backup to disk works fine.

This has happened consistently on about a half dozen attempts preventing me from making any backups to Ubuntu One. It occurs as blueaz describes: duplicity finishes creating the individual difftar files then Deja Dup reports a status of "Uploading...". This continues for a long time before the 401 error occurs. There is also a rather heavy amount of sustained out-gong network traffic at this point.

The last few lines of the console with the following command: DEJA_DUP_DEBUG=1 deja-dup --backup are:

The solution for now is to name the backup without spaces...Ex. "Backup" and not "Documents Backup" ... :)

Where is the backup named? I am just using the UbuntuOne Gui interface with all of the defaults and select "Backup Now". I never purposefully put spaces in anything including file and directory names.
