\n symbol in error message

If one tries to change user preferences and the email settings is not properly configured the following error is produced:

SMTP Error: Could not authenticate.
\n

The newline symbol \n is part of the error message. Although it does show up properly on the user preferences screen it is logged with the \n characters at the end of the error message and is also displayed like that when viewing the logs.
