Isn't the issue with the semantics of searches (that they're performed on the db field without translation) more than with "translated value during duplication"?

IMHO it's a usability issue
people are not aware that they have to translate the term in the copied language too

IMHO it would be correct to
* either NOT copy the translation - my preferred solution as this will use the entry in the working language
* ask if the translation should be copied

Well in any case I'm moving that to the server, the web client simply calls Model.copy on the existing record it has no hand in what actually happens during the copy.

affects: openerp-web → openobject-server

Xavier, I agree that the search should be made in the translated names, not the database fields, so I propose you target this but to this misbehavior.
Ferdinand, I agree with you, but not copying the translation is not an option because the field may be "require"'d. So, your suggestion eventually boils down to Bug #400256, doesn't it?

Numérigraphe, I'll be leaving the qualification of this issue (and the intended resolution if any) to the overseers of the server project (odo and vmt)

@Amit
your test case does not include

--> "forget" to change name in english

as decribed in the original bug message

the attachement shows the "unexplainable" result if
* language = German
* duplicate product "Ackern"
* change the displayed name "Ackern (copy)" to "Pflügen" AND forget to translate the english term

now search for Ackern

I leave you a demonstration video, even as this affects the search:

a workaround would be to set the name field as "not translatable" if OpenERP is used with only one language
