Bug Description

I tried to use Ubuntu 12.04 (daily build from today, Jan 11) from a pen drive, but even though I can see the Ubuntu splash, as soon as Unity should be shown the screen gets video garbage and I cannot use the desktop. After switching to TTY1, I stopped lightdm and install nvidia-current.
The installation went well, but now instead of corrupted graphics I get a blank screen and the computer completely freezes.
I am happy to provide additional information to help solving this bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/915116/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

The corrupt video and system freeze make this sound like a kernel problem to me, so I'll file it as such. Thanks for your bug report.

My Notebook-setup:

What I tried until now:
1. Installed from 12.04 Alpha 1
2. Installed any available update
3. Reboot
--> Black screen, no tty1-6 accessible (also black)

4. Reboot (only possible via power-btn)
5. Grub: replaced "quite splash" with "nomodeset"
--> Black screen, no tty1-6 accessible (also black)

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.3 kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.3-rc4 fixed the issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.3-rc4'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Ok, what worked for me is adding "intel_iommu=off" as a boot parameter. This was suggested in this article by Phoronix:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTAzNzk

As far as using the upstream kernel, is there any way of integrating it into a live pen drive or CD?
I don't have 12.04 installed in my computer because it has a bug in nouveau that corrupts the screen, so I cannot use it. Can I test the kernel in Maverick?
Thanks!

I hope someone could explain to me how to install the latest development kernel into a live pen drive, so I can try if the problem is still present. I think this bug will affect a lot of people with nvidia cards.
