Bug Description

Ubuntu 11.10
GeForce 5500
Dell LCD monitor with native resolution of 1280x1024

After installing NVidia proprietary drivers and restarting the system I expect to be able to choose screen resolution 1280x1024. Instead I'm stuck at 640x480. If I go to "NVdia settings" application I see following error:

"unable to load x server display configuration page: failed to query noscanout for screen 0".

I tried to manually add screen resolutions to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but it didn't help. I'm attaching xorg log which shows some problems ("Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0" and "No valid modes for "1280x1024"; removing.")

Similar bug was already reported for Lucid (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-settings-updates/+bug/539196) and I see that fix has been released, but Oneiric seems to be affected as well.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/913233/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Not sure which package is the real culprit. I tried also different driver version (nvidia-173-updates, nvidia-96, nvidia-96-updates) with the same buggy effect. If I click the green icon "additional drivers" I have only options for 173 and 96. I dont have option "nvidia-current". The real culprit may be package that detects available monitor screen modes, but I have no idea which package it is.

affects: ubuntu → nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 (Ubuntu)
