3ware 9750 not detected in Ubuntu Server 11.10

We have a server with a 3ware 9750-4i RAID card. The card is not detected in Ubuntu Server 11.10 although the manufacturer says all linux kernels above 2.6.33 should include native support. The card is detected fine in the same server by Centos 6.2 and FreeBSD 9.0.
