Bug Description

My home network uses WPA and this connects and reports no problems in this respect however I can only load web pages etc for the first few seconds after the connection is made. My train operator offers free wifi and this has no encryption yet when I connect to this - within a minute the whole system freezes - no mouse movement etc and only a forced power off will recover it.

+ 3.0.0-16-generic-pae - card picked up but unsuccesful in connecting and seemed to cause kernel stalls and system hang.

+ 3.3.0-999-generic-pae card is not picked up at all.

WORKAROUND: blacklist r8192e_pci.

The system stabilises if I blacklist r8192e_pci and I can use a Zydas USB stick without any issue.
I have emailed Realtek and received their driver but this does not compile for a 3.X kernel.

I should have added that I was running a LiveCD of Kubuntu 12.04, which has the 3.2 kernel.

Steve B, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please attach all information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ? As well, if you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Tried the latest upstream kernel as suggested however it seems this no longer contains the driver for my card.
I removed the blacklist entry and booted 3.0.0-16-generic-pae - card picked up but unsuccesful in connecting and seemed to cause kernel stalls and system hang. Booted 3.3.0-999-generic-pae and the card is not picked up at all.

I have screenshot of boot messages I was able to capture though they flash by so quickly its difficult to get them all, however, the system does not hang immediately in fact I can log in so full messages can be found in the log file attached.

Steve B, if your system is hanging after booting up then we would need to capture the oops information. Could you please do so following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ?
