Bug Description

The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

Reverted to pre update state (using partimage) and attempted to reinstall all the current packages.
this produced an error highlighting a possible circular dependency "pre-depend debconf-2.0 for libpam-modules". Also noticed that can not reinstall debconf and debconf-i18n at the same time as this yields an error "E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'debconf-i18n'. Please see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2)", though both can be configured separately. This produces the following errors in the apt logs

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as separate attachments? Thanks in advance.

Jean,
Sorry thought I had added the files only one seems to have been included. As I was forced to restore the partition (because it no longer booted) I lost the files.
