You mean VLC stops doing audio or VLC blocks audio for all other applications? In the latter case, it would be a PulseAudio bug.

In any case, we would need the verbose VLC log.

I have enabled logging in the prefs but the log file is not created. What am I doing wrong ?

I also noticed this issue sometimes happen when I pause a video too.

'vlc -vv' generates the log.

Here is a log.
Around line 410, I opened a lot of Firefox windows to make VLC hang, which eventually disabled the sound.
At the end (after line 510, I guess) I disabled audio then re-enabled channel #1, which brought the sound back.

I don't really see any bug here. It just looks that your system is so overloaded that VLC cannot decode audio in time.

The thing is it never starts playing audio again (if I don't disable/re-enable it), even when the CPU load decreases and video playback is back to normal.
