new U1 user created email record but no account

Bug Description

A user just reported rather odd behavior. They created a new account through U1 and SSO somehow created only part of the account. I see a record for the email address but no actual account is associated with it. The original report was:

I could not access to ubuntu one. I have registered and received an email. When I clicked the confirmation to activate and continue, there was an error. I tried to use the link to recover my password also did not help. No confirmation sent to my email. Could you please help me to get access to ubuntu one.

To allow the user to try again without deleting the broken record, I modified the email address to be '<email address hidden>'.

What sort of situation could result in a partially-created account?

I cannot think of anything out of my head. If we had an oops id this would shed some light on the issue (but I hear we cannot get it now).

Can we know if this account was created via the web or desktop ui?

With that we could try to locate the account in the logs, and see if there is anything there.

I got a reply explaining the process they used to create the account... first U1, then the web UI:

As I remember I tried to register, the first time directly from U1
desktop desktop. Since not successfully, the I tried from the website.
I got an automatic reply. I followed the link, but the always fail. I
don't remember the message.

I tried to click the forget password. The system knew my email saying
that code sent to my email, but I never received any code to recover
my password.

Anyway, the user is happy, I've only ever heard about this once, and for another bug we got all the unattached email addresses removed from the database... so I'd consider it unimportant unless it happens again. It might be interesting to check the database once in a while for unattached email addresses though. Can we easily add a custom search or report for that in the admin UI?
